It didn’t start well…

School and I didn’t get on very well. At all.

I failed all my exams and left with little more than a passion for electronics and an inquiring mind, always needing to understand how things worked (or mostly how things came apart and didn’t quite go back together again).

Please, not more clickbait content. Nope, it’s true, and you’re likely missing out.

What do most people go to Google for? Why do they visit Google in the first place, and what are they most likely to type in the search bar?

A question. Millions of them, every day.

How do I …? What is the…? Why are there…? When will the…? What’s the best way to…? What time is…? What channel is…? Who starred in …? How far is it to…? When did…?

There are myriad question to ask, but they each have one thing in common — they beg an answer, a solution, a fact, a tip, a lesson, an insight…

Would it surprise you to know you may be breaking the law right now? You write on Medium, Vocal Media, News Break and your own website, and you invite subscribers to sign-up to your own newsletter.

No harm there. Well, maybe. There’s a good chance you’re breaking the law and don’t even know it.

Most civilised countries have data protection laws in place to protect citizens from wilful abuse of their data. This was never an issue for an entrepreneur building a business through internet marketing.

That is, until the EU introduced the GDPR in 2017. The US created the…

Another scam to keep you on your toes

Using every opportunity that comes their way, scammers have, unsurprisingly, jumped on the COVID-19 bandwagon with this little gem.

Entertained, irritated, shocked, surprised, humbled and informed are some of the ways I felt after reading 52 random articles

I’ve been fortunate enough to appear in @illumination’s Featured Stories list on many occasions. Or maybe every published article makes the Featured list on that day, so I’ve only appeared on the list on the days I published. I don’t know.

Whatever the reason, it’s good for the ego, and it feels nice to have even a tiny bit of recognition for my contributions to the vastness that is Illumination, and Medium as a whole (I accidentally wrote ‘whale’ instead of ‘whole’ there. It made me chuckle, but I hesitated to change it as I do feel like a small…

Rebuilding your customer base after lockdown will challenge you, but going back to the basics of marketing will get you started.

Business to Business (B2B) marketing can be tough because there are often no aspirations to play on. The latest features and must-haves can be lost on your customers because they’re mainly concerned with their needs, not their wants.

Many B2B businesses struggle to see the benefit in actively marketing their services because theirs is a niche or specialised market and therefore requires a one-to-one conversation with prospects.

There’s an element of truth to that, but as we emerge from lockdown, the business landscape will be different and you need to understand why.

Marketing your business will never be more crucial…

Perhaps it’s time to show appreciation for what you so easily take for granted

It’s already not news that Unsplash is being, or has been, acquired by Getty Images, possibly the largest and most powerful controller of images in the known universe.

Some of you will be aware of 500px — the internet’s glorious repository of stunning photography. Aside from the content, the website itself was a thing of beauty, with attention lavished on presentation for the user.

500px was a photographer's photography site, and all images were released for use under the Creative Commons license. …
